Sports

We aim that all children will develop a wide range of skills in the main areas of physical education.

Within our Federation we understand the importance that physical activity has on our children both in and out outside of the classroom.

PE promotes opportunities for children to be creative, co-operative and competitive and to face different challenges both as individuals and in groups. Children learn valuable lessons about accepting responsibility for their personal development leading to greater self- discipline. We aim to make PE fun and we know that a “good workout” helps ease stress, tension and anxiety and will result in better attention in class.

We have four unique sites all of which provide outstanding opportunities for outdoor activities. As well as teaching the conventional aspects of PE we use our rural locations to promote outdoor adventurous activities.

We take part in area sports competitions every half term. We are proud of our school teams and aim to have every child represent their school at some stage in their school life. Children learn to develop a notion of fair play, honest competition, good sportsmanship and dealing with both success and defeat.

The PE curriculum enables children to take part in a wide variety of activities including: Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, Cricket, Rounders, Football, Rugby, Netball, Tennis, Hockey. There are also opportunities throughout the year to take part in other disciplines such as Golf, Boccia, Basketball and Sportshall Athletics.

We value our close links with our community and have built up strong relationships with our local sporting clubs including Wharfedale Rugby Club, Grassington Juniors Football Club and Upper Wharfedale Cricket Club. We receive specialist Dance, Tennis and Gymnastic teaching sessions. We also have links with Ilkley Tennis Club and receive coaching for our Year 3 children every year as well as watching professional players take part in the Ilkley Open tournament as they prepare for Wimbledon.

Our Year 6 children are able to take part in an annual residential visit where there are opportunities to take part in outdoor and adventurous activities such as canoeing, climbing, sailing, cycling and beach based team building. Year 6 also visit Gisburn Forest on a mountain biking adventure day.

Our Federation is always looking for new and interesting and exciting ways to engage children in physical exercise. We are proud of our pupils’ sporting achievements and we aim to make sure each child fulfils their full potential whilst enjoying the challenges and fun that physical education brings.
