PSHE in Our Federation: Be the Light  Grow, Care, Belong

At our Federation, PSHE plays a vital role in nurturing confident, resilient, and well-rounded children who are prepared for life both within and beyond our dry stone walls. From the earliest years, we support pupils to understand themselves, build positive relationships, and develop the skills they need to stay safe, healthy, and happy.

We use the SCARF programme as the foundation of our PSHE curriculum. This high-quality, age-appropriate resource supports children’s learning in key areas such as mental wellbeing, relationships, online safety, physical health, and living in the wider world. We have carefully adapted the curriculum to meet the needs of our pupils, ensuring it reflects our rural context while also preparing children for modern life.

Living in isolated villages brings both strengths and challenges. Our PSHE curriculum helps children develop independence, resilience, and practical life skills. As part of this, we have embedded first aid training into our Key Stage 2 curriculum, ensuring pupils know how to respond in emergencies and understand how to keep themselves and others safe.

We believe strongly in giving children experiences beyond their immediate environment. Educational visits to Bradford and residential trips to London provide valuable opportunities for pupils to encounter diversity, explore different communities, and develop cultural awareness. These experiences help children broaden their horizons, challenge stereotypes, and grow in confidence as they navigate unfamiliar settings.

PSHE is closely linked to our wider curriculum and values. Through themed weeks and real-life learning opportunities, children explore topics such as respect, equality, sustainability, and global citizenship. They are encouraged to reflect, ask questions, and develop empathy and understanding for others.

Our aim is to ensure every child leaves our Federation feeling safe, valued, and prepared for the wider world. Through PSHE, we strive to empower our pupils to be the light: to make positive choices, build strong relationships, and contribute thoughtfully and responsibly to their communities and beyond.
